Bayer Leverkusen player, Victor Boniface, will not play for Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.

This is a setback for the Super Eaglees, who are hoping to win the Africa Cup of Nations for the fourth time in total.

The 23-year-old is the latest to be injured in the Nigerian team that is among those who will compete in the tournament that will start on January 13th in Abidjan.

The player of Nice, Terem Moffi, has been called to replace Boniface, while waiting for the approval of the African Football Federation and the Ligue 1.

Boniface joins the list of Nigerian players who have given up playing in the Afcon this year, due to injury, including Nottingham Forest player, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Leicester City player, Wilfred Ndidi.

However, it is expected that Kelechi Iheanacho, who plays in Leicester City, who did not attend the Super Eagles camp, will go to the team's camp before heading to the Ivory Coast.

Boniface is at the top of the German team, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists in the Bundesliga this season.

He suffered the injury in a friendly match in Abu Dhabi where the Super Eagles lost 2-0 to Guinea on Monday.

Nigeria is in the first group in the Africa Cup of Nations which will start on January 14.

In addition, Super Eagles will face the host, Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau in the first group.
